Spontaneous days off with best friends call for two things. Wine and good food.

And the perfect location to visit with said friend? Hastwell and Lightfoot Wines, of course!

On the corner of Foggo Road in Mclaren Vale, Hastwell and Lightfoots cellar door is vibrant, comfortable and delicious. Pops of yellow greet you at the front door making you all kinds of happy- and that effect seems to carry on as soon as you tuck into the wines.

Inside the mood is cheerful and warm- beautiful timber tones throughout, artwork on display and cosy Chesterfields to curl up on in an adjacent room. There’s plenty of seating on offer both inside and out- a nice long table for bigger groups or smaller tables out in the sunroom (covered so it can be enjoyed in all seasons). When the weather is warmer my pick is the deck seating- the perfect spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the view of rolling vineyards.

More importantly though- the wines. They have a selection of reds and whites on offer, from their classic yellow and black labeling and their “Fat n Skinny” range (LOVE the name). The cellar door offers 4 free tastings and $5 for any more afterwards (redeemable back on purchases). Being designated driver I only dabbled in a few, but our favourites included the 2015 Pinot Grigio and the 2014 Sands of Time Shiraz.

Hastwell and Lightfoot‘s wines are labelled as ‘wines for eating’, so a platter with a bottle of white seemed a no brainer. Their “fat” platter was exactly that, and full to the brim with delights.  We snacked on fruits, quince, almonds, olives and bread that paired perfectly with soft and hard cheese, crackers, dips,  salami and ham- the platter game here is strong. For those who are traveling solo (or not as hungry) they also have ‘thin’ platter- think cheese, olives and all the trimmings but on a smaller scale.

This beauty of a cellar door is also holding a Super Satay Sunday Wine sale, where you can snaffle Chicken satays cooked over charcoal while you save yourself a small fortune on their wines. Like you need any other reason to visit!

You can find Hastwell and Lightfoot’s cellar door at 301 Foggo Road, Mclaren Vale
You can find out more about their Satay Sunday and wine sale event on their Facebook page.
