Hugo Wines

If you’re looking for a beautiful cellar door that offers long wine tastings, a large outdoor area and is kid friendly then I have got the place for you.

Hugo Wines in McLaren Flat.

A spontaneous catch up with a bestie and her kids the other month led us to this winery. It was both our first time there, and both our first impressions were that it was charming. As we rolled through the door a hour before close, but the staff greeted us with open arms and were incredibly accommodating. The wood fire was roaring (perfect because it was freezing) and we had the place to ourselves.

The cellar door itself is magazine worthy- architecturally designed, loads of timber, high raked ceilings, artwork adorning the walls and high bench seats so you can dabble in a tasting. It oozed class, but at the same time was really comfortable and relaxed. Again, the staff here made it for us and with two kids in tow made both us and them really welcome. As soon as we found out that Hugo’s was all about families, we sent the kids outside into the grassed area so they could burn off some energy.

There’s a big wooden toybox outside filled with things to keep the kids entertained- skipping ropes, frisbees, footballs, and colouring in for those wanting to sit. There’s also giant jenga, but I think I was more into it then the young ones.

When the weather is warmer then their outdoor area is the place to be- huge lawns, loads of seating and views of the vineyard. I can see myself sipping a Chardy out here when the suns out. It’s also the perfect entertaining space, with the ability to cater larger groups- just be sure to book in advance.

For this visit we skipped on the wine (shock horror I know), but I still casted my eyes over the tasting list. The Shiraz, Chardonnay and Grenache caught my eye and were very reasonably priced. The other half has dabbed in their reds before so I know they already get the tick of approval!

The main reason we visited was because of their platters- yes I am always about the food. Hugo’s does DIY platters and they do them well. In the corner of the cellar door there’s a dedicated bench filled to the brim with local produce. It’s as easy as grabbing a basket, filling it with goodies and handing it over- the cellar door staff will do all the work and make it look fab. I love their range of choices from the Fleurieu Peninsula- B.D Farm Paris Creek cheese (you have to try the Gris Cendre), Spice Girlz chutneys and relishes, Willunga Almonds, Brians Olives, Alexandrina Cheese and even pate from Little Acre Foods. You’re honestly so spoilt for choice- even the pickiest of platter eaters will be satisfied.

Our visit was short but sweet, and i’m already looking for an excuse to go back and spend a few hours again by the fire.

You can find Hugo Wines at 246 Elliot Road, McLaren Flat
