2 days in Marion Bay

If you are looking for a mini break destination that’s all about the beach, then you need to lock in Marion Bay for a few nights. Approximately 3 hours away from Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsula, this small coastal down is a stone throw away from the picturesque Innes National Park and it is BEAUTIFUL.

This was our second visit to Marion Bay, and we fell in love with it all over again. We were lucky to stay in a friends shack right near the beach, but on our first visit we pitched a tent at Stenhouse Bay Campground. In the heart of Innes National Park, the campground has BBQ facilities, is right by the beach and has a toilet nearby (it’s a long drop so hold your nose).

There’s plenty of campgrounds dotted throughout the park, so you’ll be spoilt for choice with spots.

Here’s a few of our favourite places to visit and things to do in Marion Bay and Innes National Park:

Cape Spencer Lighthouse

This lighthouse has such a epic view. From the top you get to take in views of the coast, the cliffs and the gorgeous scrub land. Walking back to the car we spotted some Kangaroos right on the edge of the cliff- we stood there and stared at them for ages.

Ethel Wreck

If you are winning to tackle some serious steps then Ethel Wreck is for you. This shipwreck, originally named ‘Carmelo’, became shipwrecked in 1904 and now sits partially exposed on the sand. You can see it from above if you want to save some energy, or burn off some calories and see it up close. There’s no fences or barriers so you can literally get right up to it.

Dolphin Bay

Crystal clear waters and perfectly clean sand- Dolphin Bay is absolutely stunning. Swimming however isn’t advised- there’s strong currents and large swells. Maybe just dip the toes in or make it a place to sunbake.

Shell Beach

Shell Beach is by far my favourite beach in the National Park. Beautiful white sand, glorious turquoise water and loads of bird life. We found the hidden rockpool, and it was just as good as the photos. Walk down the stairs to the beach, turn right and walk as far as you can. You’ll have to tackle quite a few rocks, but once you’ve gotten over them it is so worth it. This deep rock pool is sheltered but still gets a bashing when the waves come in- just make sure you keep an eye on the tide so you don’t get stuck.

Gym Beach

Another beautiful secluded beach. Tucked away, plenty of rocks and rockpools to explore and a short drive out of the Marion Bay township.

Daly Head

Known as a surf spot with some decent waves and a beach with some serious views. If you’re wanting to stay down that way then be sure to book a site at the Daly Head Campground, otherwise you’re next closest spot is Corny Point or other possies in the National Park.

Marion Bay Jetty and Stenhouse Bay Jetty

These jetties are perfect for a stroll, photographs and fishing. Stenhouse Bay Jetty was full of fisherman when we visited, as was the Marion Bay jetty. We tried our hand at squidding at the Marion Bay jetty, but with no success we found ourself ordering the seafood basket at the pub. We know they were around though, because after the said basket we walked the jetty and chatted to a local who had bagged 3 squid in the hour. Next time!

West Cape Lighthouse

The walk to the lighthouse was rather long but definitely worth it. It wasn’t hard work, but as it has a very loose track and right near the edge of the cliff its one to either strap in or leave the kids behind. The views however are breathtaking. There’s also a viewing point before you get to the lighthouse and a cute picnic area that’s undercover, and a boardwalk/steps that lead down to the beach.

Feeling Hungry?

There’s not a whole lot of choice when it comes to takeaway food in Marion Bay, but what they have is bloody good. If you are wanting pub food then head to the only one in town- the Marion Bay Hotel. Expect wood oven pizzas (for lunch and dinner), freshly caught seafood, awesome schnittys and burgers, as well as a cracking wine/spirits list.

If brekky/brunch and incredible coffee is your thing then you need to visit Beach Break (next to the general store). They make a fantastic brew and i’ve heard the food is REALLY good. They also sell homemade pies and sweets, cold drinks and icecreams.

Chips, icecreams, soft drinks, ice and all the other bits and bobs- head to the General Store/Service Station. Between them, the pub and the cafe you won’t need to leave town in a hurry.

Have you visited Marion Bay and Innes National Park before? I’d love to know where you stayed/camped- drop me a line in the comments below.
