Spending the weekend in Fremantle, Western Australia

A recent wedding had the other half and some of my family jump on a plane for the March long weekend to Perth.

I’ve never been before so was so excited to explore! We decided to base ourselves in Fremantle as it seemed to tick all the boxes- and that it did. There’s plenty to see and do, loads of cafes, good coffee and it’s a photographers dream.

Because this trip was all about family there was lots of meals spent around the dining table and out by the BBQ- the accommodation we stayed in was perfect for it!

There’s so much to do in this city, so we are already planning our next trip back so we can completely immerse ourself (plus there’s so many cafes I want to visit and I’m dying for a quokka selfie).

Here’s how our short but sweet trip played out…

Accomodation

We stayed in the heart of East Fremantle on Sewell Street. Because there was 6 of us I wanted something roomy, with multiple bedrooms and a big living space. I found The Jewel of Sewell and it was absolutely that- such a hidden gem.

Beautifully furnished, comfortable, perfect for kids (we didn’t have them but they are so well equipped it’s not funny), a lovely outdoor area, full functioning kitchen- you name it they have it.

I’d recommend this place to everyone from big families to couples and groups of mates spending the weekend/week away- the location itself is worth staying for.

Walk the streets of East Fremantle

If you love to take a snap for the gram then the streets of East Freo will be your dream come true. Heritage listed houses, ivy covering building walls, street art, frangipanis everywhere. It’s beautiful.

The container rainbow

It’s exactly that- a rainbow made out of coloured containers. Perfect place for a selfie or arty photo, and right by the river so it makes a lovely place for a stroll afterwards.

Fremantle markets

Very very busy with a mix of locals and tourists, this market caters for all. There’s fresh fruit ($5 packets of mango are a must), food stalls, baked goods, gifts and handicrafts. This place has it all. We snacked on Panko Chicken bao buns from What the Bao and hot blackberry jam donuts and that were so damn tasty! We also snapped up mini cupcakes (near the fresh fruit area) which also went down a treat. You got me at mini mint chocolate cupcakes!

Fremantle Jail

A UNESCO world heritage site and absolutely breathtaking. This jail will amaze and disgust you when you hear about their crazy living conditions. We took the convict tour and I highly recommend it. At a hour and 15 minutes it wasn’t too long, was jammed full of information and was really informative. A must do when you’re in Freo!

Getting immersed in the cafe culture in East Freo

East Freo was our local for this trip, so it seemed a necessity to sample some of the local food.

Hubbles yard and cafe made a mean latte and their brekky options looked fabulous.

George street merchants had great takeaway options (they made a mean zucchini and bacon slice) and were perfect when we ran out of milk- their fridges are full of local, tasty supplies.

Next door their sister cafe George Street Quarters has a great range of brekky and lunch options, and equally as impressive smoothie menu.

Young George is a restaurant offering lunch and dinner options, with breakfast on weekends. My mum popped in for dinner and said she had the best Brussel sprout salad (I don’t know how that’s possible but she’s adamant it was really good!) In the evenings the bar comes alive- it seems it’s a favourite spot amongst locals and with such a good vibe I now know why.

Gratias is a cafe selling brunch and dinner on weekends (healthy fare, woodfire pizzas, they have it all) as well as great coffee, kommunity kombucha and even fresh fruit and vegetables. You can dine inside or out the back in the quaint courtyard- you’ll never want to leave.

Sink a few pints at Little Creatures Brewery

If you’ve never tried their beer before, then you’re in for a treat. Little Creatures is a iconic name in the craft beer industry and they make a range of frothies that you will love. Their Freo brewery is massive, offers plenty of tables inside and out by the river and is complimented with a equally as big kitchen. Expect woodfire pizzas, bar snacks and some of the best chips and aioli you’ll ever have.

Bon Scott statue, Love Freo sign, Ferris wheel and Fishermans Wharf statues

Because tourists love to take photos of statues and large signs. On the riverbank near the Marina. The Ferris wheel is just across from the Little Creatures brewery and takes in some beautiful views.

Have you ever been to Fremantle before? I’d love to know your must visit spots for our next trip back over the border. Let me know in the comments below!
