Watching, eating and LOL’ing your way around the Garden of Unearthly Delights

It’s the most wonderful time of the year in Adelaide- it’s Fringe time! The east end of Adelaide comes alive and one of my favourite places to hang, The Garden of Unearthly Delights, has the best atmosphere.

Whether you’re there for a show, a bite to eat or a spot of people watching, you’ll find it all in the one area.

Here’s my picks for shows to visit this year in the Garden…

Splash test dummies

A hour filled to the brim with all things circus tricks, acrobatics and jokes. Perfect for the whole family and reasonably priced.

Massaoke Mixtape

You better bring your dancing shoes to this bad boy because I’ve heard there’s some awesome tunes playing. 3 hours of classic songs from all genres so everyone will have a great time. There’s some fabulous reviews for this one, so pop it on the list for the end of your night out!

House of Mirrors

One epic and trippy art installation. Hundreds of mirrors from every angle make for a very fun optical illusion. Prepare to get seriously lost (I know we did!).

The Thin White Ukes

This Melbourne based group have been performing Bowie songs since 2014 and Ive heard they put on quite the performance. They cover all the classics and are bound to make your feet tap and hips sway.

Kevin Quantum- Vanishing Point

This magic show is on my must visit list- I was devastated when I missed him last year. Epic illusions, fancy tricks, huge stunts- this show promises it all.

Peter Coombe in Live it Up and Fry an Egg on a Slippery Dip

It’s Peter Coombe, do I need to say any more. He was a legend when I was a kid, and im going to say his songs are still as awesome today as they were 20 years ago.

Nazeem Hussain- Basic Idiot

I’m a sucker for Nazeem- I think he’s hilarious. It appears his sold out shows all across the globe suggest that everyone else is on the same bandwagon as me. His new solo show is set to be a cracker and I cant wait to check it out.

Another Night at the Musicals

We saw their original show last year at the fringe and it was fabulous. Filled with all things glittery, huge ballads and crass humour. Le Gateau Chocolat and Jonny Woo are a match made in drag queen heaven- it will get the non-musical lovers (like myself) dancing in their seats.

Séance

There is no way in hell that I would ever step foot into this shipping container, so for those who do, I applaud you. 20 minutes of darkness and some seriously scary sounds (that’s just the beginning I’ve heard). If you’re game then give it a go- and don’t tell me about it because I’ll have nightmares.

Tom Thum & Jamie MacDowell

These two musical geniuses are a dream together. I saw their show last year and would recommend it to everyone. Tom is a beatboxing legend (and will have you thinking, how can he make those noises) and Jamie will have you swooning with his dreamy guitar jams and voice. The shows are sold out for a reason!

Djuki Mala

This show was on my list to visit last year- I’m determined to make it this year. They were the winners of Best Dance Adelaide Fringe & Fringe World 2017, so you know you’re in for a treat. They combine dance with storytelling all in a high energy performance. I can’t wait to go!

The Little Palais

This isn’t a particular show, but The Little Palais runs short sessions several times a night and it’s so much fun. We have been for the last few years and loved it. An affordable and intimate show, several artists covering everything from magic to comedy. Sometimes the unplanned, cheaper shows are the best ones.

Akmal- Open for Renovations

Akmal is one of my favourite comedians, so this one is a no brainer. He’s quick witted and just damn hilarious. An hour of laughter for under $40- that’s my kinda show.

LIFE- The show

If you loved Blanc de Blanc, Limbo Unhinged, Fear & Delight and Limbo, then you need to check out LIFE. It promises drug references, full frontal nudity and all of the fun. I have loved every one of their shows so I cannot wait to check this one out. Definitely on the top of my much watch list!

Feed your belly

We haven’t had a chance to suss out all of the food at the Garden, but so far these are a few of our favourites-

Corn Star– hot corn on the cob, say no more.

Caro Club– wings, delicious burgers, loaded fries and crispy fried chicken. Tried and tested and bloody delicious.

Motherlode Nuggeteria– nugs, sandwiches and fries. These nuggets were next level good.

The Tuckshop Arms– hotdogs nestled right next to the bar. Yes thanks.

Pigs on fire– looking for the hanging meat in the middle of the garden. Pork crackling, smoked and cooked meats and all the trimmings, this place is delicious.

Have you been to the Garden this year? What’s your favourite place to eat and show to see? I’d love to know.
