In my opinion a good winery (in winter) should have the following: an open fire, great wine selection, a interior to make you feel cosy and the option to have platters if your heart desires.
Well Paulett Wines has kinda massively exceeded my expectations and blown them out of the water.
On a Tuesday my partner and I came to this gorgeous cellar door by a recommendation from staff at another winery. What a great choice it was.
When we arrived at this cellar door located in the Polish Hill Region we were met by a beautiful wine dog who loves a good pat. OK at this stage I was smitten as I am a sucker for dogs.
Upon entering the cellar door we were further greeted by by 2 lovely ladies who operated the cellar door. They talked us through their extensive wine tasting list and I dabbled in maybe one to many rieslings. The riesling list offers all varieties from a typical drier Clare Valley riesling to a polish hill river “aged released” which has more sweetness. Their sparkling riesling is a nice change from your typical champagne and tastes clean and crisp.
Other than the whites they have some excellent reds including a Trillians sparkling red which the other half and I both loved. And lastly if wines are not your thing (hey I don’t judge), then give their beer a crack. The “Last Minute” beer has been brewed locally through the Clare Valley Brewing Co but the flavours are those of the wine makers at Pauletts. It’s not the cheapest of beers by the carton but when you taste it you may find it hard to resist.
When your not tasting and laughing and chewing the cellar door staffs ears off like I did then their is plenty to look at and keep you entertained- locally painted artwork hangs on the walls, history about the winery and the surrounding area and plenty of local produce and wears to look at-or keep. They also have a big roaring fire which was well and truly needed this time around. The view from the cellar door is sensational, rolling hills and vineyards will catch your eye and if the clouds stay away I have been told you can see as far as the Flinders Ranges.
To compliment this cosy cellar door is a new cafe that has been opened to the public for around 6 weeks. The Bush Devine Cafe is attached to the cellar door and seating is located out on their newly refurbished deck- complete with heat bars and clear blinds for the winter (so you can still see the breathtaking view) and a open roof for summer if required. The cafe has a smaller menu but boasts huge flavours. They showcase a variety of traditional Aboriginal ingredients in their meal which are sourced locally from their on site bush garden.
