Gili Islands

I can’t even begin to explain how beautiful the islands are- they are honestly breathtaking. My partner and I spent a total of 3 nights there, and in my opinion that was no where near enough time. We stayed on Gili T- the most popular of the islands.

Sleep: We stayed at the Hotel Ombak Sunset. I booked our accommodation through scoopon as they offered a stupidly cheap deal. It was the first time I booked overseas accommodation through the site and it worked like a dream. The hotel boasted gorgeous gardens, a massive swimming pool with swim up bar (and a excellent range of happy hour cocktails) and a huge buffet breakfast. There is plenty of other options on Gili T- mostly hotels- but also some really cute villas up for grabs.

Activities: We spent most of the days riding a bike around the island (or pushing it through the sand), stopping off at bars and restaurants and relaxing on the beach and by the pool. We also hired snorkeling gear and went out by ourselves- the colours of the fish are incredible. Hire equipment for snorkeling and bikes are available at several shops at the island and at most hotels. You can also go out on a boat for the day and be taken to some of the best spots to swim within the coral with fish and even see sea turtles (you can also see sea turtles off of the beach so i’m told!)

Eat: One place that I would highly recommend for a feed on Gili T is Scally Wags. They had a huge menu, very friendly staff and excellent food. The place was pumping and super busy- and after eating there you soon know why. Go at dinner time- the menu is a lot better the lunch options. We also ate at lots of little huts and cafes on the beach where they served fresh juice, beer and fresh food like salads and rolls- perfect for when you want to rest in the shade after a long day of snorkeling and bike riding.

Getting Around: The island has no motorised transport, so if your visiting it’s best to try and pack light! Bikes, walking and horse and cart are the best mode of transport around the island, with the option of a boat for travelling between the islands.

If you’re looking for the perfect place to wind down, then you need to check out the Gili Islands- it will have you leaving refreshed and in love with this hidden paradise. We cannot wait to come back!
