PPH- Perfect Platter Hunting 4, the Autumn edition

It’s been a long time between platter posts- let’s face it, I’ve been too busy eating cheese and not spending enough time writing about it. Now that the vineyards are changing colour and the weather begins to get cooler, its the perfect time to hunt out some fabulous cellar doors to bunker down in and eat your body weight in cheese and cured meats. Here’s a few of my platter picks for this Autumn-

Doc Adams Wines

Doc Adams is a beautiful and family friendly cellar door in Mclaren Vale. If large outdoor areas complete with games for the little ones sounds right up your alley then get moving. The bigger kids are also looked after, with some delicious wine flights on offer for tasting and their own locally brewed beer. In terms of the platter, their game is strong, offering a DIY platter option so you can load up on as little or as many dips, olives and cheese as you like. Our favourites are the orange smelly brie cheese and the espresso cheese- it pairs perfectly with their Melbourne espresso Martinis.

You can find Doc Adams wines at 276 California Road, Tatachilla

Yangarra Estate

Out in the vineyards towards Kangarilla (and my favourite coffee cellar door, Dawn Patrol), Yangarra is another family friendly cellar door with beautiful lawns, a cracking deck and a cozy interior. Their wine list is long (were not complaining) and they have a fridge packed with local and imported cheeses, so you can create your own platter. YUM! Oh and hot tip- their rose is delicious.

You can find Yangarra Estate at 809 Mclaren Flat Road, Kangarilla

Hastwell and Lightfoot cellar door

In Mclaren Vale, Hastwell and Lightfoot is a small cellar door with a inviting and relaxed feel. Their wines are affordable, delicious and hilarious- any wine named “fat n skinny” is my kinda wine. They offer two different sized platters, one called the ‘fat’ platter and the other, the ‘thin’. The fat is filled with fresh fruit, dips, cheeses and meats, all for $30 to share between two. Bargain!

You can find Hastwell and Lightfoot at 204 Foggo Road, Mclaren Vale

Artwine Estate

We recently discovered this winery when we took a girls trip to the hills and it’s absolutely DIVINE. We couldn’t fault any of the wines we tried, the cellar door staff were so helpful and the view from the tasting room is one to be seen. They offer a range of cheese plates and charcuterie platters filled with pate, pickled veggies, breads and house cured olives designed to be shared between two. When you see whats on the cheese platter you’ll want to get one of each.

You can find Artwine at 72 Bird in Hand Road, Woodside

Barrister Block

This winery is hands down one of my favourite in the hills. Barrister Block boasts a stunning outdoor area with huge lawns, perfect for big and little kids. Their sparkling blush wine is a personal favourite- I could drink it by the bucket full. In terms of platters they offer a HUGE cheese platter, filled with soft, hard and blue cheese, picked veg, dried fruits, crackers and warm bread. Between that and a pizza (which also is a must), us three girls were bursting at the seams.

You can find Barrister Block wines at 141 Onkaparinga Valley Road, Woodside

Harry’s Deli @ Wirra Wirra Wines

Attached to the iconic cellar door at Wirra Wirra, Harry’s Deli is a casual cafe where you can get locally roasted coffee, wine, lunch and platters. And these platters are epic. Harry’s Deli has a focus on supporting local producers, so you’ll find plenty of Fleurieu and SA fare on those boards. I recommend Harry’s Platter- filled with the famous Clappis sourdough, Pate from Little Acre Foods, Brians olives, seasonal condiments, Spice Girls Moroccan jam, cured meats and plenty more. For $60 it easily feeds three people, and that’s being generous.

You can find Harry’s Deli at Wirra Wirra at 14 McMurtrie Road, McLaren Vale

Do you have a favourite spot to get giant platters? I’d love to know where they are- please leave me a note in the comments! x
