Looking for a picturesque winery in the heart of the Adelaide Hills, with top notch wines and DIY platter options?

Well you need to get yourself to Nepenthe Wines.

This beautiful little cellar door is nestled between the vineyards in Balhannah- only a short drive from the popular tourist town Hahndorf. The cellar door itself is quaint, but the grounds surrounding it are vast and stunning. Inside the cellar door you’ll find ample seating on a decking area, however if the weather is delivering the goods I suggest you enjoy a vino on one of the many picnic benches dotted around the lawns overlooking a ginormous old tree.

Serious winos will love their long wine list filled with both whites and reds. We fell in love with their wines and cellar door at first glance, and we also loved how friendly the cellar door lads were. Some of our favourite wines on the list were the 2013 Pinnacle Gate Block Shiraz (a big, bold shiraz), the Pinnacle Ithaca Chardonnay (a very oakey chardonnay) and the 2014 Arneis (a very, very easy to drink white wine).

If you’re after a sneaky feed while you are having a glass, Nepenthe offers a range of locally made produce on hand to create your own DIY platter. The fridge is stocked with Udder Delights cheese, Oak Bank Flavours fruit pastes and cured meats from Skordila. In terms of crackers and sweets you’ll love their options- Baylies crackers, Michael’s Olive Oils and boutique chocolate slabs from Stirling’s Red Cacao. Prices are quite reasonable and the best bit- you can choose as much or as little as you like (hot tip: it’s hard to stop at just a few things).

This cellar door is one to pop on the list for when you’re Adelaide Hills bound.

You can find Nepenthe Wines at 93 Jones Road, Balhannah.
