Gillies Street in Adelaide has always been known as the home to an amazing market. But now it’s known for so much more.

Introducing my favourite new corner-cafe, Fawn Coffee

If you’re a sucker for excessive greenery in windows, light filled spaces, hand made furniture and simple brekky options then this cafe will have your name written all over it. The interior and cafe is inspired by a gorgeous restaurant in Copenhagen where the owner Amber Bennett dined one day. She loved the experience so much that she did not want to leave- so she captured the feel and vibe of it and brought it home- calling it Fawn (I seriously need to get to Copenhagen and find this place!)

Amber Bennett, a interior designer, runs this little joint, and to say it is impressive is an understatement. As soon as you walk into the door you get that sense of calm and the feeling like you are at home. You’ll find beauty in the simplest of things- cute embroided wall hangings made by Amber’s mum, little posies little on the table’s, more and more plants and wooden furniture and magazine holders handcrafted by her Dad. Talk about a crafty family!

If you are a sucker for a great brew you will be stoked to know that Dawn Patrol Coffee is their house blend, as well as stocking a range of fresh teas. For those who like a bit of fizz their homemade lemonade, sparkling elderflower and the Bickfords range are a nice change from the usual soft drink varieties.

On the food side of things you will find a daily breakfast menu, stocking simple but hearty meals plated to perfection. Vego’s will fall in love with their Corn and Zucchini Fritters with tomato and salsa yoghurt or their Homemade Granola served with honey yoghurt and seasonal fruit (we spied on an adjoining table eating this and it looked delish). They also have a range of sandwiches, cakes and salads in a glass cabinet by the counter which will no doubt tempt you when you drop past. All of the food that they dish out is prepared fresh and made from scratch in house- so if there’s something you’ve got your eye on its best to hop in early.

The other half  and I were there for brunch the other week and even with a smaller menu we still struggled to decide. He chose the Eggy Crumpets with Bacon and Maple and I chose the Homemade Pot Pie with chicken, bacon & mushroom and a side salad. Both of these were reasonably priced, as are all the items on the menu. Double win.

My other half had the crumpets and he was well impressed. They were deliciously light and fluffy and soaked in ample maple- resembling that of French toast. There was plenty of bacon on the side and the banana + blueberries cut through all that sweetness (plus who doesn’t love banana and maple, or bacon and maple).

My Pot Pie is what pie lovers dreams are made of. Think a super crispy top and a lush and creamy filling bursting with bacon, chicken and mushys. So rich and flavoursome. I also may have been caught using my finger to get the remaining sauce out of the ramekin- it was that good.

Other than amazing food and coffee, this place has seriously good service and their attention to detail is second to none. What other cafe has all your favourite magazines and serves their lattes in little hand knitted jumpers made by their mum- I can’t think of one.

We will be back to slowly eat our way through the menu- sausage rolls, the mushrooms on toasted sourdough with creme fraiche, garlic and thyme + pastrami sandwiches are seriously calling my name.

You can find Fawn at 269 Gillies Street, Adelaide
