just a little warning. this recipe is not for the health conscious.

my late grandma is American and was a excellent baker. I only have memories of her from when I was a young girl, but the memories I do have are all about food. she was lovely and I miss her dearly. before she passed away she wrote a cookbook, complete with old pictures, for myself and all her other grandchildren (yes amazing I know). I found this recipe in there and have used it several times and it’s delicious.

chocolate chip cookies



1/2 cup of white sugar
2/3 cup softened margarine
1/2 cup of packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/2 cup of chopped nuts (I use walnuts)
1 1/2 cups of plain flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 packet of milk chocolate chips (200-250 gram size will do)


pre heat oven to 180 degrees celcius.
line baking trays with baking paper.
mix sugars, margarine, egg and vanilla in a large bowl with a wooden spoon until mixture is creamy and has no lumps.
stir in remaining ingredients.
drop by rounded teaspoons (slightly bigger if desired) about 4-5 cms apart on prepared trays.
cook for 8-10 minutes or until slightly golden. be sure to check them if you want to take them out of the oven a tad earlier to have them chewy.
once out of the oven allow to cool slightly then transfer to a cooling rack.
